? How do I choose the correct power cord size — 18AWG or 16AWG?

Choosing the right size power cord depends on how much power your device uses and how long the cord needs to be. Here’s a simple way to figure it out:

✅ Step 1: Check your device’s power rating

Look at the label on the back or underside of your device, or near where the power cord plugs in. You’re looking for one of the following:

  • Amps (A) or Watts (W) — often listed as something like “120V / 2A” or “240W”

✅ Step 2: Check your current cord (if available)

Look along the length of the cord — the gauge is usually printed directly on the insulation. You’ll see something like:

  • “18AWG” or “16AWG”

  • You may also see max voltage and amperage (e.g., “125V / 10A”)

? What’s the difference?

Cord Gauge Max Current Rating Best For
18AWG Up to 10 amps Most light- to medium-duty devices (up to ~1000 watts)
16AWG Up to 13 amps Slightly higher-powered devices, longer cord runs, or if you just want extra durability

? Still unsure?

If you’re not sure what your device draws, or you’re right at the cutoff, we generally recommend choosing the 16AWG version for a little more safety and long-term durability — especially for medical, therapeutic, or continuous-use equipment like air purification or infrared devices, sleep systems, etc.
